Lutheran Christians believe that the church has three central reasons for existence: 1) to preach God’s Word; 2) to teach; 3) to administer the sacraments. After the worship life of a congregation, nothing is more important than its educational program. Mt. Olivet’s program includes the following.

SUNDAY SCHOOL (Sundays at 9:45 AM)

Sunday School begins at age 4 and continues through grade 8. Learning is tied to worship at Mt. Olivet. In two year, group graded classes; children and youth study the same lessons that are read in church services that morning. Learning experiences involve activities and experiences that enrich Bible learning. In addition, there are periodic projects and experiences that cross age boundaries. Singing is incorporated into the Sunday program with children having the opportunity to sing during worship on occasions.

FIRST COMMUNION INSTRUCTION

At about age 7, and with parental approval signaling their belief that their child is ready to be prepared to receive Holy Communion, a half-day workshop is held for children focusing on the meaning of Holy Communion. Those who have been prepared then begin to receive the sacrament.

CONFIRMATION CLASSES (Sundays at 8:45 AM)

In grades 9 & 10, youth are invited to attend a special class on Sunday mornings with the pastor. Learning includes the contents of Luther’s Small Catechism (the 10 Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer along with sessions on the sacraments) and surveys of the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament. Confirmation is preparation for individuals to affirm their baptism and accept an adult role in the life of the Church.

ADULT LEARNING (Sundays at 8:45 AM)

There is a regular Adult Forum on Sundays. The forum engages in study and discussion of contemporary issues facing the church and study of the Bible. There are also studies and reflection series planned for adults at other times during the week on a periodic basis throughout the year.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Vacation Bible School at Mount Olivet is a family affair. It includes children and adults of all ages, gathering for supper and an evening program one week each summer. The meal is shared by all, children engage in study, crafts, drama and games while adults engage in Bible study. At the conclusion of the evening’s program, everyone gathers for a fun time of song and fellowship.
